Amy frIend
Amy Friend is a Canadian photographer who uses light in her photos. She uses the same technique in every photograph but all are still unique in their own way. In this image, you can see she has photographed a group of people and edited in dots of light of the figures of people. I find this interesting because it’s different compared to what other photographers do. She does this in every image but sometimes she outlined the figures with them, sometimes she puts them in the background and other times she fills the entire figure with them, for example, this image.

Uta Barth
Uta Barth is a German-American contemporary photographer. She uses shadows in her photographs. These shadows are usually taken near a window, on a wall. In this image, you can see that the photograph was taken on a curtain and and shadow is distorted and follows the creases of the curtain. I think it’s an interesting image

Florence Henri
Florence Henri uses an interesting use of light in her images. She uses shadows and reflection when taking images. She usually puts a mirror near the object she is photographing and uses the shadows on the image to define the photograph further, making the image more intriguing. I think this image is interesting because she uses water, a mirror and shadows to display light and reflect and define the image.

My response
I think these are my best images because i used different uses of light. The first image is the photograph before I edited it. I edited the photograph in a similar way to Amy Friend. I think these are my best images because I was able to use shadows, reflection and light in one image. I think the composition of the image is good because the main subject isn’t in the centre but your attention is still drawn the the centre of the image. I took a series of photos like this but these were the best ones. I think, to develop my photographs more I can edit them differently and possibly retake them and refine them to make them better.

In this photograph there is, a group of people in the middle of the image, which might be a family. The photograph is blurred so you can only see the figures of each person, there are around 9 people. The photograph was taken at night with skyscrapers behind them. It looks like there is a reflection in the image where lights are reflecting off. There is also a burst of light near the group which looks like fireworks. This adds a bright atmosphere to the image. This is a street photograph but it’s a different type of street photograph because the features of the image are blurred and distorted. This blurs the details of the photograph and confuses us on what is happening.
I think Ming Smith made this image by standing in front of a window at night time while the group of people stood outside. She would’ve shaking the camera to create the blur effect. If I has to recreate this image I would do the same technique. I would stand on one side of a window inside a building and shake to camera to create the blur effect. I would make sure you can see the lights inside the building to create the same effect, with people outside it. This picture makes me feel happy and nostalgic. The image looks old which creates a sense of memory and nostalgia. The image was taken on July 4th in America which would make it seem to be a happy memory and celebration for the people in the image. If I had to ask the photographer questions I would ask her, how did you feel when taken this image? Do you know the people in the image? What did you take the image with? Ming Smith creates lots of photographs using similar techniques and in the same atmosphere. She has a story behind all of her images about the history behind why she took the photo. This picture relates to the creative use of light because you can see lots of lights in the image with no source with make the photograph interesting to look at. My RESPONSE |
When I was creating my physical response to the image, I thought about the different techniques Ming Smith used. I took the photos in a dark atmosphere so the photographs would be dark. I changed the brightness on my phone when taking the pictures which created the bright blue contrast. I also shook the camera so it would create the same blur effect that is in Ming Smith’s photograph.
I think the photographs came out well because I was able to use the same techniques Ming Smith used while also creating my own original images.

Jaromir funke
Jaromir Funke was a Czech photographer, he lead the figure of Czech photography in the 1920s and 30s. Funke uses reflection and light in his photographs. He plays with shadows to create interesting still life photographs.
In this photograph there is a mirror and cardboard. The light is reflecting and creating a shadow on the wall which looks like a building. There is lots of light and dark aspects of the photograph which creates a contrast and depth. The atmosphere of the photographs is dark but happy. The contrast with the light creates a mixed atmosphere of happiness and sadness.
Jaromir Funke create this image by leaning a mirror and a piece of cardboard on each other with paper behind them to create a blank background. He put a light behind the camera to create shadows and depth in the image.

My RESPONSE
I think I successfully responded to Funke’s work and implemented his style into my work. I was able to use shadows and reflections to create interesting photos. I should’ve found more objects to photograph and photographed them differently. When I refine my work, I’m going to edit the photographs to add more shadows and depth to the photos.
