Questions & answers
1) How would you describe this photograph to a person who could not see it?
In the centre of the picture, there is a triangular sign, above it there is a cloud which is sitting on top of it, making the sign look like an ice-cream cone. To the left of the sign, there is a house which is the same size as the sign, it is a rectangle with a triangular roof on top of the rectangle. Next to the house, on the left side, there is a triangular tree with a caravan underneath it. To the right of the right of the sign, there are more trees in the form of a triangle with a smaller car underneath them, next to that is a road on the far right side of the picture with a few cars driving at the end.
2) How is space represented in this photograph? (foreground, middle ground, background)
In this photograph, the main focus is in the foreground with the sign in the centre of it, but the foreground doesn't consist of much else except for grass and a pavement with the sign's shadow. The middle ground is more closed compared to the foreground. It has a house, with trees and cars, which focus' your eyes to the middle ground. In the background, there is just a sky with clouds, which brings the attention to the sign and how the photo is framed.
3) What is in or out of focus? How has the subject been framed/cropped?
The photo has been framed so that the sign and the clouds are lined up to look like an ice-cream. The photographer has focused the whole picture so that the sign and clouds look like they are close together when they're actually really far apart. The picture looks like it has been split into two half's because of the way the photographer framed the photo, making one side look happier than the other.
4) Which part of the photograph strikes you as most interesting - captivating, surprising, puzzling, mysterious? Why?
The part which strikes most interesting to me is the sign and the cloud above it and how the photographer was able to vision the picture with the cloud and sign lined up to look like an ice-cream, and if the photographer had originally seen a different scene and then they saw what else they could do to with it or if they had immediately seen this one.
5) What questions would you ask the artiest about this work, if s/he were here?
6) What do you think it would be like to live in this photograph? What makes you think that?
If you had to live in this photograph, I think it would be a boring and sad life because the image is grey and doesn't have much going on, the dull colours will make you sad constantly. You wouldn't have much to do there, it might be fun at first, exploring the place but after a while you'll get used to it and there will be nothing to do.
7) Why do you suppose the artist made this photograph? What makes you think that?
I think they took this photograph because they thought the cloud placed on top of the sign looked like an ice-cream, the cloud being the scoops of ice cream and the sign being the cone.
8) What do you think is effective about this photograph? What doesn’t work so well?
I think the framing of the photograph works well and fits the picture well. I don't think the colour filter on the picture works well and it makes the photo boring. I think the middle ground being full of trees and houses works well but draws the attention away from main subject of the picture.
